American stunt rider and motorcycle builder Indian Larry (born Lawrence DeSmedt on April 28, 1949, died on August 30, 2004) was a well-known motorcycle builder, stunt rider, and biker. In the 1980s, while he was cruising the streets of New York City on a chopped Indian motorbike, he earned the nickname “Indian Larry.” Larry, who is well-known as an old-school chopper maker, want to see choppers more widely accepted as an artistic endeavour. He had an early interest in hot cars and motorbikes, and he was a fan of Von Dutch and Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, both of whom he would later meet when travelling across California. Native American Larry’s ability to draw a large audience only became widely recognised in the final few years of his life.
A motorbike accident caused by him while performing at a bike exhibition resulted in his death in 2004 from his injuries. In September 1998, Easyriders magazine highlighted his bike, Grease Monkey, which he built himself. During the second season of Motorcycle Mania II on Discovery Channel, Indian Larry was a participant, as were three more Biker Build-Off programmes in the following years. During this time, he designed and constructed the motorbikes Daddy-O (also known as the Rat Fink bike), Wild Child, and Chain of Mystery, among others.
